Tutorial: Installing ELIPS Studio for Mac

This document describes the procedure for installing and setting up ELIPS Studio on Mac OS X.

ELIPS Studio is a plug-in for Adobe Flex/Flash Builder that enables the rapid development of Rich Mobile Applications in Flex with ActionScript 3 and MXML languages for mobile phones running popular OS such as Windows Mobile, Android or iPhone.

 

Prerequisites: System Requirements

ELIPS Studio runs on host machines with the following configuration:

Operating Systems: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and above
Processor: Intel processor 2GHz
RAM: 1 GB minimum recommended
Necessary Disk Space: 400 MB

IMPORTANT: ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT REQUIRED

You must have administrator privileges on your Mac to run the installer of ELIPS Studio.
If you do not have administrator privileges on your Mac, please ask your IT manager to perform the installation.

ELIPS Studio installation assumes that the following software programs are installed on your PC.

Optionally, if you are willing to develop mobile applications for Windows Mobile based phones, you will need a tool to copy/install the .CAB application on the phone.
As Microsoft ActiveSync is not available for Mac, you can install a tool like SyncMate.

 

Prerequisites: Mobile Phones

The recommended devices for running applications with ELIPS Studio are:

  • Windows Mobile 6.0, 6.1 and 6.5 based devices such as HTC Touch Diamond, HTC Touch Pro, HTC Touch 3G or Samsung SGH-i900v
  • Android 1.6 (and above) devices such as HTC Dream or Motorola Droid
  • iPhone 3.0 (and above)
  • Symbian v5 based devices such as Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

 

Installation Procedure

The ELIPS Studio installer package installs all modules on your Mac.

  1. Just copy locally the file "ELIPS_STUDIO_3_0_X.PKG", click on it to run the installer and then follow the steps.

  3. Read and accept the End User License Agreement to proceed with the installation.

  5. Read and accept the License Agreement, and click on continue.

  7. With the following screen, you can select the installation folder for ELIPS Studio. "Install for me only" will install ELIPS Studio in /applications in your home folder. Select "Install on a specific Disk..." to change the default installation folder.
    It is recommended to keep the default folder with a short path, to avoid potential build problems due to too long path.

  9. In the next screen, click install to complete the installation.

  11. In the popup, browse to select your Flex Builder 3 and/or Flash Builder 4 and/or Eclipse .app. They will be found automatically if you installed them in their default path.

Start-up and Workspace Configuration

After succesfull installation of ELIPS Studio, you can start designing Mobile Applications using the Adobe Flex/Flash Builder tool as a front-end.

  1. In order to run the ELIPS Studio, go to the /Applications folder in the path you selected upon installation, then click Elips FB3.app or Elips FB4.app to open.
  2. As a result, Flex/Flash Builder is going to be launched together with the ELIPS Studio add'in.
  3. Set the ELIPS SDK for Flex/Flash Builder as the default SDK before creating a new Flex projects: Go to the menu "Window"->"Preferences"->"Flex"->"Installed Flex SDKs", then check the "ElipsFlexSDK".
